Making your own baby food!-re posted from my old blog

You do not need one of those fancy and expensive baby food processors to make your own baby food . Below is a list of the supplies that I use to make my daughter's baby food. It is easy to make and nutritious too!
1. Steam basket (This item fits into most pots and costs around $6 at Target)
2. Cutting board/good knife/peeler
3. large bowl
4. Hand blender (I use the Cuisinart that I purchased at Costco, most of these cost around $30)
5. A few freeze cube trays (I used Annabel Karmel Freeze Cube trays, they are easy to use and dishwasher safe $10 a piece)
6. Silicone spatula scraper (I have a KitchenAid that I purchased at Marshalls for $3.99, marked down from $10)
7.Large Freezer bags

And of course last but not least, your ingredients! Target and (If you are lucky enough to have one nearby) Sprouts have great organic produce. For example, you can find a bag of organic apples at Target for around $3. Sprouts also has specials on their organic produce at .99 cents per pound.(I purchased delicious organic apples for .99 cents a pound)
There are several websites that have baby food recipes. Of course start off simple and then you can make recipes that require multiple fruits or veggies (you *always* want to give one fruit or veggie to your baby at a time with a few days in between to make sure he or she is not allergic).
My baby enjoys a pear, parsnip and apple puree, and a sweet potato, carrot and butternut squash puree. I recently tried cantaloupe (it was on special at Sprouts), and she loves it. It is a sweet and refreshing fruit that is full of vitamin C and very easy to make into a baby food.
I make my baby food once every two or three weeks (depending on what I am low on). You can make a batch and throw some in the fridge (to be eaten within 3 days) and freeze the rest. Once the cubes are frozen (it takes about a day), you can put them in a freezer bag. (Be sure to label them and put the date you made the food on the bag) Most of these baby food cubes can be safely frozen for up to three months. If you get really ambitious one day you could make a lot of baby food cubes and not have to make any more for months! Just make sure you have the freezer space!
Super easy and will not break the bank! Once you have made all of your supply purchases, you only pay for your produce or meats. You also know what is in your baby's food because you had the pleasure of making it! Good stuff!

**I recently saw some silicone brownie trays for a few dollars at Michaels..I am not sure if these are a good substitute for the baby food freezing trays. I would definitely give it a try though! Green Sprouts Silicone freezing tray is also an option. I saw that one on Amazon for $8. If you have the Amazon mom Prime account, you can order it and not pay shipping!
